As true lovers of fine jewellery, we present one of the world’s most famous pearls so far
Who doesn’t love pearls? This wonderful round iridescent ball that shines and shines. Today we are going to tell you about the most expensive pearl in the world, which belonged to the most famous and extravagant queen of all.
Pearls are actually very rare, and they are they only precious stones that come from a living creature. They can form in mussels in rivers and freshwater and in oysters in saltwater. There are several types of pearls, each of which varies in price, quality and whether it formed naturally or was cultured with the interaction of humans.
Pearls are created when a mollusc feels threatened by an irritant, at which time it activates its defence mechanism, which entails covering the irritant with layer upon layer of an iridescent substance known as nacre until a pearl is formed. The time to create a pearl depends on how long this process takes, but a pearl is usually formed in two to four years.
The pearl of royalty
Since pearls are extraordinary pieces, they fetch very high prices in the market, especially if they have belonged to royalty. Hence, one of the most expensive pearls in the world belonged to Queen Marie Antoinette. It is a pear-shaped natural pearl hanging from an oval-shaped diamond by means of several strings of diamonds that come together to form a bow.
In 2018, a Genevan jeweller auctioned off a large collection of jewellery owned by the Bourbon-Parma dynasty, including jewellery that had belonged to Marie Antoinette and of course the large pear-shaped pearl. It was initially expected to sell for $3 million, but the final result of the auction was a total surprise. The large pearl sold to anonymous buyer for $36 million (about €32 million), making it the most expensive pearl in the world.
