Geneva 2022 – What’s new from the titans of watchmaking

The acclaimed Watches and Wonders fair, an event eagerly anticipated by the major players in the watch industry, was held from 30 March to 5 April 2022 in Geneva, Switzerland. This huge watch industry convention was a chance to exhibit in the shortest time possible most of the latest releases from many of the world’s most important watch manufacturers.

To be specific, this article takes a closer look at the main new releases by one of the major brands, TAG HEUER.

This year, TAG HEUER presented six new models at the event held in Geneva: the Monaco Gulf Special Edition, the Aquaracer Professional 300 Orange Diver, the Carrera x Porsche Limited Edition, the Aquaracer Professional 200 Solargraph, the Aquaracer Professional 1000 Superdiver and the Carrera Plasma Diamant D’Avant Garde.

For the 2022 edition, continuing on with its long-time collaboration with GULF, the piece is equipped with the in-house HEUER 02 movement, a first in the Monaco Gulf edition. TAG HEUER is aweing enthusiasts with a more striking, more refined version of the in-house HEUER 02 movement contained in the finely brushed and polished steel case.

A truly attractive piece.

Taking its cues from the Orange Diver Ref. 844, an all-time favourite, this watch shares the same codes as its predecessors: a luxury tool watch that brings out the adventurer in all watch enthusiasts. It features its essential orange colour contrasting with a striking blue colour to feel closer to the ocean.

A model defined by its sporty look and feel – a limited edition. The chronograph’s sporty design is made even more stunning by the aesthetic appeal of Porsche. The timepiece’s yellow accents are a nod to Porsche’s racing colour. An independent and powerful mindset for this new 2022 model.

The sun, a limitless source of energy, inspired the creation of this new model, which incorporates the innovative solar module called Solargraph. No battery changes are required; it recharges with solar or artificial light. Light that also illuminates the Super LumiNova on the watch’s bezel, dial and hands, making the timepiece readable both day and night.

Created for deep diving and with exceptional performance. As the first watch to use calibre TH30-00 produced by Kenissi Manufacture SA, it is a milestone for TAG HEUER. Thanks to its helium valve, the watch was designed to work in saturation diving and to resist the most extreme pressures. It earned ISO 6425 certification for saturation diving watches. It features a custom protective case that is as resistant as the watch as well as a rescue dive torch.

D’AVANT GARDE technology combined with a disruptive design. Lab-grown diamonds, a major milestone in the brand’s more than 160-year-old history. A new way of mastering design and the play of light with material and the versatility of the diamonds allows for unbounded creativity. Cutting-edge aesthetics, versatility and design codes have the power to make a watch truly unique. An example of the company’s avant-garde, innovative spirit.

From this outstanding event, we can draw two conclusions about the TAG HEUER brand and collectors of these luxury watches will understand the brand’s two main goals for 2022: INNOVATION AND CUTTING-EDGE STYLE. The new releases presented are set to lead the watch market with these amazing new models.

Pantone® X IWC Schaffhausen

With its exceptional resistance to magnetic fields and a power reserve of up to 7 days, this watch is intented for the modern adventurer.

The Breitling Navitimer, the favourite watch of aviators

The Breitling Navitimer is undoubtedly one of the primary cult watches on the watch scene. This iconic watch stands out with its slide rule dial. Pilots swear by it, and for good reason. A closer look at this legendary model.

The story behind the Navitimer

The Breitling Navitimer was created in 1952 to provide pilots with a true instrument they could wear on their wrist. Its name is a contraction of the words «navigation» and «timer». The slide rule on this watch allows wearers to analyse and solve all air navigation calculations. Hence, it is possible to calculate things such as fuel consumption and flight time and convert miles to kilometres. Indeed, when it came out, it was extremely popular with collectors.

The rebirth of the Navitimer

The Navitimer disappeared somewhat in the 1970s. Yet, it came back on the scene in 2009 when it was equipped with a manufacture movement, Breitling calibre 01, a technologically advanced chronograph movement that is COSC certified. Subsequently, in 2014, the case size was increased to enhance readability. Since then, the Navitimer has continued to captivate fans of watchmaking and aviation.

It contains the Breitling manufacture calibre 01, the perfect example of excellence and reliability. This model is distinguished by its steel case, its black dial with a red seconds sweep hand, its silvered chronograph counters and its applied hour markers.

The Navitimer 1 Chronograph

The 41 mm version features a black, blue or silver dial with tone-on-tone counters. The famous circular slide rule on the bidirectional rotating bezel makes it possible to perform all necessary air navigation calculations.

Watch certifications

All watch connoisseurs are concerned about certifications, as they should be. Certifications are a guarantee of quality and precision. They reflect the excellence, knowhow and passion of Swiss watch manufacturers. Would you like to know more about watch certifications? Here you go.

COSC certification

In 1973, five watchmaking cantons (Bern, Geneva, Neuchâtel, Soleure and Vaud) and the Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry decided to found the Official Swiss Chronometer Testing Institute, also known as the COSC. This independent control body grants certificates of excellence exclusively to Swiss watches.

To earn this certification, a watch undergoes performance-related testing. The average daily rate, the difference between rates in horizontal and vertical position, and the variation in rate depending on temperature are all fundamental criteria to earn this certification. Many major brands have their models regularly certified by the COSC, including Rolex, OMEGA, Tissot and TAG Heuer.

OMEGA METAS certification

In 2015, legendary watchmaker OMEGA unveiled its first Master Chronometer (METAS) certified watch, the OMEGA Globemaster Co-Axial Master Chronometer. This certification can be obtained by all Swiss watches, in addition to COSC certification. It ensures excellence in terms of performance and resistance to magnetic fields.

This certification, granted in addition to COSC certification, is open to all Swiss watches. It guarantees an unprecedented level of performance in terms of precision and resistance to magnetic fields.

A watch is rigorously tested to earn METAS certification. Indeed, it must withstand a magnetic field of up to 15,000 gauss. It must also have superior power reserve and water resistance. These tests take place over the course of 10 days. At the end of this time, if a watch passes the tests, it will receive METAS certification. Such certification is a way to dispel many concerns about the proper functioning of a timepiece.

There are still other certifications. If you would like to learn more, feel free to ask us for advice about certifications directly at our shop.
