What are complications?

The word complication indicates something that is considered complex or difficult. As
regards watchmaking, a complication consists of additional functions that complement a watch.

What difference does a complication make?

These features added to a watch represent a serious challenge to skilled watchmakers who have to incorporate them in spaces as small as a wristwatch case.
The more functions a watch has, the more complicated it will be to manufacture.
Today, complications add value to watches and directly affect their price. There are many different types of complications, including chronograph, power reserve, tourbillon, etc.
Here we are going to focus on the tourbillon, the GMT and the chronograph.

Tourbillon

What is a tourbillon? In basic terms, it is a feature that improves the accuracy of mechanical watches by offsetting the effects that gravity can have on certain parts of the movement when the watch changes position.

Tourbillon watches feature a tourbillon carriage that is often visible on the watch’s face.

GMT

This is a very useful complication, especially for frequent travellers, as it makes it possible to quickly see the time in the place you are visiting and at home. GMT stands for “Greenwich Mean Time”, thus giving meaning to the world time function. 

GMT is the mean solar time at the Royal Observatory in Greenwich, London, which marks the Prime Meridian that runs from the North Pole to the South Pole.

Chronograph

It is used to measure short time intervals. To do so, a watch with a simple chronograph has two push-buttons, one on each side of the crown, that are used to start, stop and reset the measurement. 

There are other kinds of chronographs: 

  • Mono-pusher: three actions are performed with a single push-button
  • Rattrapante: allows you to time different events that start but do not stop at the same time.
  • Flyback: allows the chronograph hand to return to zero and restart immediately by pressing the push-button once.

This time, the watch is available in several sizes: 46, 43 and 41 mm. Two case materials: stainless steel or 18-carat red gold. Different straps: semi-gloss alligator leather or seven-row metal.

Emphasis should be placed on its colors; blue, green and copper. It is these new colors that define the new dial options. 

In addition to all these details that make you fall in love, there is a singularity that awakens nostalgia and that is the return of the AOPA wings to their initial position at 12 o’clock.

MAY 2022: THE LATEST FROM OMEGA

The year 2022 is full of great new pieces for watch lovers. It looks like it is going to be a year of accomplishments and achievements for Omega. April marked the arrival of the new Speedmasters, the Speedmaster 57 and the Moonshine Gold. Now we are welcoming the new Constellation 28 presented by none other than actress Zoë Kravitz, aka Catwoman in the new The Batman film. Other additions are the Constellation Co-Axial Master Chronometer 36 and the new 007-edition Diver 300m Co-Axial Master Chronometer 42 mm.

THE CONSTELLATION 28 MM

This work of art from the 5th generation of the iconic Constellation models is distinguished by its finesse and femininity. It features slimmer claws, refined bezels and exquisite bevelling along the edges of the case and bracelet, making the piece look more compact and streamlined. The skeletonised hands and hour markers on each new Constellation 28 mm model are crafted in 18-carat white gold. Each model in the collection has its own personality expressed through vibrant colours on the dial and a matching bezel. Their beauty is also the result of the pastel colours. 

CONSTELLATION CO-AXIAL MASTER CHRONOMETER 36 MM

The timeless, stunning design of this Omega Constellation stands out with its famous half-moons, the “claws” on the case and its iconic mono-rang bracelet.

It is crafted out of 18-carat Sedna gold and measures 36 mm in diameter. It features a bezel engraved with Roman numerals, a blue sun-brushed dial with a date window at 6 o’clock, and hands, Omega logo, Constellation star and hour markers made out of 18-carat Sedna gold.

DIVER 300M CO-AXIAL MASTER CHRONOMETER 42 MM

This watch, this work of art, is identical to the watch worn by 007, Daniel Craig, in the film No Time to Die. Measuring 42 mm in diameter, it is made out of strong yet lightweight grade 2 titanium and features a «tropical» brown aluminium bezel ring and dial. 

It is slightly slimmer than standard Diver 300M models, because of the convex shape of the sapphire glass, and comes with a brown, grey and beige striped NATO strap with 007 engraved on a titanium loop.

Omega continues to be a top player in 2022 with its constant release of new models.

Geneva 2022 – What’s new from the titans of watchmaking

The acclaimed Watches and Wonders fair, an event eagerly anticipated by the major players in the watch industry, was held from 30 March to 5 April 2022 in Geneva, Switzerland. This huge watch industry convention was a chance to exhibit in the shortest time possible most of the latest releases from many of the world’s most important watch manufacturers. 

To be specific, this article takes a closer look at the main new releases by one of the major brands, TAG HEUER.

WHAT’S NEW BY TAG HEUER

This year, TAG HEUER presented six new models at the event held in Geneva: the Monaco Gulf Special Edition, the Aquaracer Professional 300 Orange Diver, the Carrera x Porsche Limited Edition, the Aquaracer Professional 200 Solargraph, the Aquaracer Professional 1000 Superdiver and the Carrera Plasma Diamant D’Avant Garde.

TAG HEUER MONACO GULF SPECIAL EDITION

For the 2022 edition, continuing on with its long-time collaboration with GULF, the piece is equipped with the in-house HEUER 02 movement, a first in the Monaco Gulf edition. TAG HEUER is aweing enthusiasts with a more striking, more refined version of the in-house HEUER 02 movement contained in the finely brushed and polished steel case.

TAG HEUER AQUARACER PROFESSIONAL 300 ORANGE DIVER

TAG HEUER AQUARACER PROFESSIONAL 200 SOLARGRAPH

No battery changes are required; it recharges with solar or artificial light. Light that also illuminates the Super LumiNova on the watch’s bezel, dial and hands, making the timepiece readable both day and night. 

TAG HEUER AQUARACER PROFESSIONAL 1000 SUPERDIVER

Created for deep diving and with exceptional performance. As the first watch to use calibre TH30-00 produced by Kenissi Manufacture SA, it is a milestone for TAG HEUER. Thanks to its helium valve, the watch was designed to work in saturation diving and to resist the most extreme pressures. It earned ISO 6425 certification for saturation diving watches. It features a custom protective case that is as resistant as the watch as well as a rescue dive torch.

TAG HEUER CARRERA PLASMA DIAMANT D’AVANT GARDE

D’AVANT GARDE technology combined with a disruptive design. Lab-grown diamonds, a major milestone in the brand’s more than 160-year-old history. Pantone® X IWC Schaffhausen

Color is one of the characteristics that make us choose one watch over another. This year, the famous Swiss watchmaker IWC Schaffhausen has teamed up with Pantone® to create some unique timepieces. Let’s discover the models unveiled at Watches and Wonders 2022.

IWC Woodland

This color, we are sure, will make many people fall in love with it. This deep green is inspired by the suits of elite pilots and the forest landscapes of the TOPGUN flying school. The watch is equipped with the IWC Manufacture Caliber 69380, which ensures accurate timekeeping measurements up to 12 hours. This movement is robust, precise, and reliable.

IWC Lake Tahoe

The color of Lake Tahoe is inspired by the typical winter white of the Lake Tahoe area. This area is often used for training by naval aviators. IWC Mojave Desert

It is the location of the TOPGUN flight school that made this color possible. Indeed, this sandy color is inspired by the desert landscape that can be seen around China Lake. The Mojave Desert is equipped with the IWC 52615 movement, which has been designed to withstand extreme conditions. With its exceptional resistance to magnetic fields and a power reserve of up to 7 days, this watch is intented for the modern adventurer.

IWC Ceratanium®

This not-quite-black is mesmerizing thanks to its matte appearance. The new Ceratanium® material has an ultra-sophisticated manufacturing process. Behind this black envelope is the IWC Calibre 69385, an extremely robust, reliable and precise chronograph movement.

IWC Jet Black

This model features a deep, matte black color that is inspired by the technical components of modern jet aircraft. The watch is equipped with Caliber 82100 which gives it a nice 60-hour power reserve.

The Breitling Navitimer, the favourite watch of aviators

The Breitling Navitimer is undoubtedly one of the primary cult watches on the watch scene. This iconic watch stands out with its slide rule dial. Pilots swear by it, and for good reason. A closer look at this legendary model.

The story behind the Navitimer

The Breitling Navitimer was created in 1952 to provide pilots with a true instrument they could wear on their wrist. Its name is a contraction of the words «navigation» and «timer». The slide rule on this watch allows wearers to analyse and solve all air navigation calculations. Hence, it is possible to calculate things such as fuel consumption and flight time and convert miles to kilometres. Indeed, when it came out, it was extremely popular with collectors.

The rebirth of the Navitimer

The Navitimer disappeared somewhat in the 1970s. Yet, it came back on the scene in 2009 when it was equipped with a manufacture movement, Breitling calibre 01, a technologically advanced chronograph movement that is COSC certified. Subsequently, in 2014, the case size was increased to enhance readability. Since then, the Navitimer has continued to captivate fans of watchmaking and aviation.

The Navitimer 1 Automatic 38

This automatic watch perfectly combines historical charm and elegance in a contemporary timepiece. The case features a beaded bezel and comes with different straps. The Navitimer 1 Automatic is driven by Breitling calibre 17.

The Navitimer 1 B01 Chronograph

The Navitimer 1 B01 Chronograph, which measures 43 mm in diameter, combines technical mastery with an original design. It contains the Breitling manufacture calibre 01, the perfect example of excellence and reliability. This model is distinguished by its steel case, its black dial with a red seconds sweep hand, its silvered chronograph counters and its applied hour markers.

The Navitimer 1 Chronograph

The 41 mm version features a black, blue or silver dial with tone-on-tone counters. Cómo cambiar la pila de un reloj

Si es un entusiasta de los relojes, y tiene algunas piezas automáticas, es posible que también posea excepcionales relojes de cuarzo. Cada reloj tiene sus propias especificidades y, el reloj de cuarzo, a diferencia de los modelos automáticos o de cuerda automática, funciona con una pila. Sin embargo, antes de cambiar la pila, debe conocer el procedimiento a seguir y si dispone de las herramientas adecuadas en casa. Veamos con más detalle este proceso.

¿Cuándo hay que cambiar la pila de un reloj?

Hay que tener en cuenta que la vida de una pila de reloj es de aproximadamente dos años. Por supuesto, cada reloj es diferente. El uso que el propietario haga de él también puede variar la vida útil. Algunas funciones, como la del cronógrafo, también reducen considerablemente la duración de la pila. Por desgracia, es difícil saber cuándo se agotará la pila de su reloj. En general, hay que esperar a que el funcionamiento del reloj se detenga. Sin embargo, algunos relojes tienen la función End of life (EOL) que avisa del final de la vida útil de la pila. Esto permite anticipar el cambio de la pila para que no se detenga en ningún momento. Como una señal de alarma, el reloj avanza 5 segundos. Una pila que ya no funciona debe retirarse rápidamente de un reloj, ya que existe el riesgo de oxidación y esto puede dañar el mecanismo de su reloj.

Antes de empezar

  • El espacio debe ser adecuado, por lo que no hay que correr riesgos innecesarios al manipular las piezas. Para ello, disponga de un lugar tranquilo con una silla cómoda frente a una mesa bien iluminada.
  • Recuerde que es importante no poner los dedos en el movimiento. Esto podría dañarlo de forma irreversible.
  • Antes de volver a colocar el fondo, compruebe que el anillo de encaje está correctamente colocado y que la junta está en buen estado.
  • Si tiene alguna duda, no dude en acudir a un relojero. Esta operación no es cara.

¿Cómo se abren los fondos?

El fondo de un reloj es la tapa de la parte posterior de la caja. Hay tres principales y no se abren de la misma manera.

Fondos con clip

Los fondos con clip se abren con una navaja de relojero. Introduzca la herramienta en la ranura y haga palanca. Estas tapas traseras son difíciles de cerrar sin la ayuda de un especialista.

Fondos atornillados

Los fondos atornillados se abren con una llave especial. Tiene que colocar la herramienta en las muescas localizadas en la parte posterior del reloj, y luego girarla suavemente. Proceda a la apertura con cuidado para no rayar la parte trasera.

Fondos con tornillos independientes

Para los fondos con tornillos independientes, bastará con un destornillador de buena calidad del tamaño adecuado. Tenga cuidado de no dañar los tornillos durante la operación.
