Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève 2021

A little history

The Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève is a foundation that was created in 2011 that promotes the watchmaking art. Every year in November, it organises an awards ceremony in Geneva, Switzerland.

Any watch brand can participate with watches that are commercially available after March and before the end of October of the current year. They simply send an end entry form and present one or more watches.

The award given to winners of the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève resembles a hand, which symbolises the knowhow and mastery that is essential in the watchmaking crafts. It was created by the Genevan painter and graphic designer Roger Pfund.

GPHG 2021

The winners of GPHG 2021 was released on the 4th of November.

This year, Bulgari CEO Jean-Christophe Babin took the “Aiguille d’Or” Grand Prix at GPHG 2021 for the brand’s Octo Finissimo Perpetual Calendar.

Other awards won

The Grand Seiko Hi-Beat 36000 80 Hours Calibre 9SA5 model by Seiko won the Men’s Watch Prize. This marvel combines a striking dial with a state-of-the-art manufacture movement.

MB&F did not fall short this year, as the brand won not one but two awards. The first was in the “Men’s Complication» category for its LMX Titanium with a hand-winding mechanical movement.

The second prize was in the “Artistic Crafts” category with the “Around the World in 80 Days” model.

Chopard was also one of the lucky ones. The brand won the “Jewellery Watch» prize with its Flower Power model. A jewel crafted by the artisans at Maison Chopard that honours the Paradise theme.

“Time is money” is an expression dating back to the mid-18th century attributed to Benjamin Franklin. In his work Advice to a Young Tradesman, Benjamin Franklin wrote, “Remember that time is money”. While there are many translations in many languages, the expression always means the same thing: use your time wisely to earn the most money!

Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso: the tale of an icon !

Tribute Reverso JLC Lecoultre

It all began in India in 1931 after a polo match.British officers challenged their friend, alias Jaeger LeCoultre, to create a watch able to withstand the shocks of their favourite sport, polo. The Reverso was born, having since become timeless.

The legend of the Reverso continues to captivate its enthusiasts, who were rewarded with an anniversary model to commemorate the 90th anniversary of this iconic watch by Swiss watchmaker Jaeger-LeCoultre. The basic principle was simple: a reversible case designed to prevent the glass on wristwatches worn by British polo players in India from breaking during polo matches. The Reverso, a timepiece created in the mid-19th century, reflected the Art Deco values prevailing at the time, i.e., elegance, universalism, understated aesthetics, a combining of simple geometric shapes, an affinity for handcraftsmanship, and an enthusiasm for playing and partying. Over time, the timepiece has become increasingly more customisable, thus attracting many male and female enthusiasts.

The Timeless Stories Exhibit in Paris

Affiche expo Paris

From 21 October to 24 December, JaegerLeCoultre is presenting the Reverso Timeless Stories exhibit in Paris on 15 Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré in the 8th arrondissement. This comprehensive exhibit focusing exclusively on the Reverso watch for its 90th anniversary explores the creative and cultural universe of this modern yet timeless watch through four themes.

The brand name is pronounced differently depending on the country. For example, in France they say “Jeh-jair” for Jaeger; however, Jaeger is a German word and in Germany they would say “Yeh-ger”, a pronunciation that is in fact favoured by some employees and watchmakers at the company. But in the end, it is the French pronunciation that is most widely used in public speeches. So, long live “Jeh-jair LeCoultre !”

The Marie Antoinette pearl

As true lovers of fine jewellery, we present one of the world’s most famous pearls so far

Who doesn’t love pearls? This wonderful round iridescent ball that shines and shines. Today we are going to tell you about the most expensive pearl in the world, which belonged to the most famous and extravagant queen of all.

Pearls are actually very rare, and they are they only precious stones that come from a living creature. They can form in mussels in rivers and freshwater and in oysters in saltwater. There are several types of pearls, each of which varies in price, quality and whether it formed naturally or was cultured with the interaction of humans.

Pearls are created when a mollusc feels threatened by an irritant, at which time it activates its defence mechanism, which entails covering the irritant with layer upon layer of an iridescent substance known as nacre until a pearl is formed. The time to create a pearl depends on how long this process takes, but a pearl is usually formed in two to four years.

The pearl of royalty

Since pearls are extraordinary pieces, they fetch very high prices in the market, especially if they have belonged to royalty. Hence, one of the most expensive pearls in the world belonged to Queen Marie Antoinette. It is a pear-shaped natural pearl hanging from an oval-shaped diamond by means of several strings of diamonds that come together to form a bow.

In 2018, a Genevan jeweller auctioned off a large collection of jewellery owned by the Bourbon-Parma dynasty, including jewellery that had belonged to Marie Antoinette and of course the large pear-shaped pearl. It was initially expected to sell for $3 million, but the final result of the auction was a total surprise.  The large pearl sold to anonymous buyer for $36 million (about €32 million), making it the most expensive pearl in the world.

At Geneve Company, we love fine jewellery, which is why we constantly strive to create and offer unique pieces that embellish the lives of others, to help fulfil dreams and, above all, to create a magical moment during your experience at Geneve.

You can see our pieces and those we carry from different brands on our website or by visiting us at any of our shops.
